Coaching staff in 2014 IF Mack returns...

If for some reason Mack were to be retained next year, what do you think our coaching staff would look like?

I'd venture to say that we will lose some of the coaches, especially the young ones, because they probably know that it will be Mack's last and coaches usually aren't retained by a new coach.

I'm guessing that we'll have a new offense as Wyatt and Applewhite will either take a HC position or OC position elsewhere. I'll also guess that Bo Davis is also gone. Robinson and Akina are toss ups.

Thoughts?

Unless one of the coaches takes a head coaching job or promotion job at another school, I think there is a good chance that all could return, with the exception of Robinson (he said he would be DC for the remainder of the year and only as a favor to Mack) but no longer. Maybe the defensive improvements will be enough to keep him on. Akina may be getting close to hanging up his whistle, but I hope not.

I think if Robinson leaves, Akina is right behind him. I think Wyatt is questionable at best.

Yeah, Wyatt is the one I think could be in line for a promotion job (the sole OC, possible head coach) of another school. Dude is a helluva coach and recruiter. Would hate to lose him.

The worst thing that can happen would be Mack returning. There's absolutely no positives to that scenario. If Mack stays I think Major is gone for sure. Not because Mack wants him to leave, but because he's going to want to get started somewhere else. He could be in line for a job like Houston if Levine gets a bigger gig as head coach. Wyatt could stay if he's given complete control of the offense, but that's probably not a guarantee either.

Not sure if Searles is going to get another gig right now and I highly doubt Chambers would go anywhere. Porter is probably safe too since he's not going to be in line for any HC or OC promotions and is getting paid well in his current role.

On defense I think Giles would be back without a doubt given his ties here and Akina would be able to return if he wanted. Davis is a crapshoot. I think if Robinson returns he'd be back. That said, I'm not sure if Robinson would return given his age and the fact that he didn't want the gig full time before this season started. And getting a top shelf replacement to come in if he didn't return would be tough given Mack's lame duck status.

I think we are splitting hairs here because the only way Mack would even have a chance to return would be running the table and I don't see that happening, but it's a good discussion. In my opinion none of these guys are back next year.

Let me just say this, as of VERY recent Major is under the complete belief that he will be coaching somewhere else next season. The family wants to make sure he stays in Texas or as close to Texas as possible. Major could do much worse than being at UTSA and under Larry Coker's tutelage for a couple of seasons. Keep in mind, Coker has won as many National Championships and has had his teams play in the same amount of National Championship games as Mack Brown. Sure the pay won't be what he is making today but he could possibly fast-track to a HC position at UTSA quicker than anywhere else in the Nation.

And talking about building a program from the ground up, Coker has done just that at UTSA! Has Major been in talks with Coker? Not that I'm aware. HOWEVER, Coker's last 2 OC's have made moves to bigger programs with the last one moving to take the UH OC position. Hell, Major plays his cards right and he COULD be the next HC at UTSA. Coker won't coach forever and the in-laws would LOVE for that to happen!

My point is that if Major is under the belief that he will be coaching somewhere else next season then the other coaches are under the same belief- which I have heard myself.

SG, what are you hearing on Mack if you can share? And thanks for your participation also.

As McPhaul has stated in his post today, Mack is out. The deal that Mack made was with DODDS, Red, Powers, & JJ. Dodds is longer around. Red is disgusted (as is Joe I've been told depending on what day it is!). Powers is trying to hold on to his job.

Mack has had a 15 year track record. The guys that are now making the decisions are not going to let Mack drive this program into the dirt before doing something about it. As McPhaul stated, Dodds being gone means Mack is shit outta friends..

Change is coming..
