The point on a brisket is typically the fattiest cut. Pitmasters often trim the point (and select edges) off a brisket and return those pieces to the smoker.

Are burnt ends tough, chewy worthless cuts of meat, or are they heavenly bites of smoky goodness? It depends on who you ask...

Rather than discard the trimmings and fat, we choose to savor all the information that flows through the site. So, sit down and help yourself to some burnt ends.

We'll kick things off this week with 2016 WR commit Collin Johnson. Johnson tells us he sustained a shoulder injury diving for a ball in the Valley Christian vs. Oak Grove game on September 11th. How's he holding up? "Hanging in there," he tells us. Johnson had surgery on September 18th for what turned out to be a torn labrum. The elite receiver will be sidelined for a handful of months. While the injury is deflating, Johnson will support his teammates from the sideline. As for Longhorn fans are concerned, Johnson plans to graduate early and enroll at Texas in January. He should be ready and available to participate in spring ball in Austin.

After an exciting but ultimately disappointing loss to Cal, we caught up with several of the recruits who were in attendance on Saturday. The SLC 3 (Southlake players Robert Barnes, Obi Eboh, and Lil’Jordan Humphrey) made their way to Austin for the game. Texas commit Obi Eboh brought along his two teammates who both hold Texas offers, and it sounds like they all enjoyed the experience. “It was fun”, Eboh said. “We got to watch a great game.” Eboh noted that Jerrod Heard had the recruits section buzzing with his electric performance. “He was incredible. We were going crazy when he scored. Absolutely nuts.”

Southlake Athlete Lil’Jordan Humphrey was watching this game closely, because both teams on the field were high on his list of interest. In fact, Cal and Texas both sit at the top for the talented playmaker and have put some distance between themselves and other schools. We caught up with Humphrey who told us he really enjoyed himself. We also asked Humphrey what his thoughts were on the new look offense Texas was running. “It’s different, but they really try to spread the ball around and get in the playmakers hands. I like it.” That point stuck out to Humphrey because the Texas coaches are recruiting him as a receiver. Our sources in Southlake continue to indicate good things about Humphrey and Texas, and the Texas coaching staff is continuing their relentless recruitment of the most versatile athlete in the state.

HornSports high school coverage this week will include perhaps the crown jewel of the 2016 Texas recruiting class. Quarterback Shane Buechele leads Arlington Lamar up against Arlington Martin in the kickoff to District 4-6A competition. Buechele is surrounded by SEC talent on offense with Alabama commit Chris Owens on the line and Arkansas commit Kofi Boateng out wide. Oklahoma State pledge Madre Harper stars at DB for Lamar, and the Vikings are primed for a playoff run in 2015. This will be our first extended look at Buechele outside of a camp setting, and HornSports will be bringing you updates all night from Cravens field.

2017 Pflugerville Hendrickson defensive end Nelson Mbanasor is a familiar face on the 40 Acres. The local prospect made a return trip to Austin for the Cal game one week after attending the victory over Rice. Mbanasor hasn’t landed on the radar yet in his class, but he is seeing some early interest from the hometown program. “Coach Strong and Coach Vaughn said they have a lot of interest in me”, Mbanasor told us. Nelson had a great time at both games and said the frequent visits are giving him an increased comfort level with the program and staff. Mbanasor’s brother PJ was a standout defensive back in last year’s recruiting class who signed with Oklahoma and is currently on campus there. With a sibling already north of the Red River, Mbanasor said that won’t be a factor in his recruitment. “Really I’m open to go wherever.” Mbanasor also told us he will be looking to make another visit to Austin this year as he continues to build his relationship with the Texas coaching staff.

New Orleans (LA) Brother Martin Tight End Peyton Aucoin made his way to Austin for his first game since committing back in the summer. For anyone wondering, Aucoin is a strong commit who is very happy with his commitment. The big tight end enjoyed himself at DKR on Saturday and gave us some insight to what the game environment was like in the recruits section. "The visit was great, I loved every minute of it." Aucoin got to witness the coming out party for Jerrod Heard up close and personal and he told us that the recruits in attendance were buzzing. "Everyone was just really excited to see him go out there and pick apart the defense play after play." After returning back to New Orleans after his weekend in Austin Aucoin tweeted pictures of him with QB commit Shane Buechele. We asked about Aucoin if he and Buechele had an opportunity to hang out while on The 40. "It went nice. We sort of just got to know each other and I think we will build from there."

Jerrod and Malik are going to be recruiting magnets.

Nice report, fellas. Heard's becoming a REAL plus for us, on and off the field.
