A Conversation With a Sports Agent..

I have a friend who can’t be named, so I will for the sake of this post call him Jim. Jim has had a lot of dealings in the Dallas area and is connected to one local owner of a pro sports franchise. He is friends with one of the top Sports Agents in the country. He shared a conversation he had with this agent over the weekend.

First the agent, that I can’t name, has clients all over the spectrum. universities, every major sport and has several Dallas Cowboys players as clients.

Jim had dinner with the agent and their wives. After the dinner, the agent shared some tidbits about coaching searches. (He has (4) Division I head coaches as clients) He laughed when Jim mentioned the sources on the Texas head coaching search, because he told Jim he would bet any amount that Doug cared to lose, the vast majority were started by the prospective head coaches own agent.

His words were to the effect that it is never a bad idea to have your client linked to a plum coaching job. It’s also why nearly every free agent player is linked to the Cowboys, Yankees, or the Mavericks. It’s good for current coaches looking for an extension, and it’s never a bad time to remind your present employer that you have options.

Later when the time is right and enough has been milked out of the sourced rumor, the client can proclaim their love for wherever they are and take themselves out of consideration. He said it works and the person they leak the source to(through a third party) never knows the wiser.

Just remember this when you see another source linking this coach to a school. It was quite likely it was made up by his agent?

The he said something interesting. He said interviews are a whole other animal.

In other news, the agent also asserted the fluidity of water and the Catholicism of the Pope.

I thought it was insightful, sorry you didn't..

I'm sorry, that came off a bit blunt. However, this is pretty standard industry knowledge and why 6-10 coaches have/will receive large raises this year.

I was told the agent has no dog in the hunt but knew who Texas was targeting...but laughed when Doug asked who, and wouldn't say. Lot's of other stuff as well but nobody likes rambling posts..

Thanks, bevomav. It's why I read Wall Street Journal and watch 'Special Report with Bret Baier' on Fox News... to stay up with the obvious.

I somewhat know the obvious (I'm a geopolitical/finance researcher) but enjoy confirmation of the meaningful.

In this case, I was not that aware of the coach-agent dance.

I thought it was odd when the news came out that Fisher was talking to his coaches about a move to Austin. Now makes sense. Shortly after that he got a big raise.

My thought..and not saying this happened..but..what if a nationally prominent agent talked to, say, "A Different Friend of Bevo", and told him that his client is interested in the Texas job and had informal communication with said job. but keep it low, and no names?

Would you think that different friend be convinced there was something to it?

It’s also why nearly every free agent player is linked to the Cowboys, Yankees, or the Mavericks.
Mavericks? Didn't know they were on the same level as the Cowboys and Yankees.

So should we negate all the potential coaches that have received raises?

No Saban

No Fisher

No Briles

Harbaugh, Harbaugh, Strong, Malzahn, Franklin & Gruden?

Mavericks? Didn't know they were on the same level as the Cowboys and Yankees.
Check out my name again.. Bevo Mav .. but the rumors are because of Cuban and his wheeling and dealing. Then check out how many rumors the Mavs are in?
