And yes, I confess, I still get goosebumps listening to it. . .
It is a great story. . . .
Happy 200th to the Star's Spangled Banner.
"O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming?"
This is truly a great story and yes, you can still see the famous flag with it's 15 stars and 15 stripes at Ft McHenry today..... 200 years ago Francis Scott Key was attempting to negotiate a prisoner exchange and was not allowed to leave British warships so he was forced to witness the attack on Ft McHenry which inspired the poem, later set to music we now know as the Star's Bangled Banner. He wrote the poem on the back of an envelope, all he had to write with. The city of DC and the White House had been put to the torch an Baltimore was next.
Had Baltimore fallen, the war might have been lost and our fledgling nation's transcendent experiment with a democratic Republic experiment would have bowed to tyranny and oppression. . . .The commander of Ft McHenry defending Baltimore harbor ordered a MASSIVE flag to be flown. The British Admiral took it as a slap in the face and attempted to destroy it by cannon fire. . . .Key, who was attempting to negotiate a prisoner exchanged watched as the .. . ."rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air". . . . . as the british attempted to bombard Ft McHenry and destroy the flag throught out the night. "oh say can you see at the dawn's early light". . . the attack lasted throughout the night and come dawn and the fog, the question was if the flag still waved. .
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
. . . ..the flag was and still is a symbol for FREEDOM, breaking the restrictive bonds of a tyrannical monarchy . .. was it still standing? . . . .... . . . .. I remain humbled by the vision and courage of those who founded the nation and stood up. . . .these are the thoughts which went through Key's mind as he shared in his poem.. . . ..
BTW, the flag still can be seen at Ft McHenry.
It has 15 stars and 15 stripes. . .even though we had 18 states at the time.
It was a poem later set to music but would not be the "official" national anthem until 1931 .. .
