Gary Patterson comes out of the closet for expanded playoff

Even though I think the playoffs are eventually expanded to eight, I prefer going to six teams max. Except choose the six AFTER the conference CG's, not in lieu of...... which would keep the "other" few deserving teams after the regular season (those ranked 7-10) in position to grab a slot...

    7-6

Tough to beat many decent teams with a patchwork OL and QB who's had a handful of snaps in D-1. But Charlie's post-game PC didn't emphasize offense....and that scheme played right into BYU's hands. And any attempt to open up and stretch the defense downfield rarely happened. If that type...

    Hornsports' Favorite War Movie

Patton One of the best screenplays for any war flick. Coppola wrote it before directing "The Godfather" And the opening stage monologue w/Scott is darn near perfect.  Side note- Karl Malden is terrific as Omar Bradley. Oscar-nominated score by Jerry Goldsmith too.

    Cowboys fans, remember this?

Remember that 1980 Pittsburg team well (I played there a few years earlier). Their defense WAS bad ass.  But the 83 Daingerfield team was the best 3A defense I've ever seen. And that includes many 4A teams as well.

Mack Brown on the Paul Finebaum Show

Sally wants Mack back in coaching? Why? If she (they) ae so hungry for the media attention, then working for ESPN is the most natural, comfortable landing spot. Mack nailed the Urban Meyer interview and for a wider Gameday audience, could step in for Corso later.   And for Nebraska, really?

    Crossfire update (Unfriended)

Really like this community but not much content recently. I'd let my OB subscription lapse but have renewed to catch up. And even it's not up to  the prior standards when Chip was on board.  Hoping for more "insider" info this football season. That's why I thought this site would  be different.

Horseshoe Bay Resident, ex-Texas Coach Fred Akers talks Longhorns

Akers was one dropped punt away from iconic status at Texas. And he beat OU 5 times in his first 7 years against some great Sooner teams.  79, 81 and 83 D's were excellent. Under-rated coach.

    Texas vs. OU 1976

Was there too that day. Never sicker after a tie in my life. Guess DKR felt the same, as he (as rumor has it) threw up right afterthe game ended. Two things I recall- (1) late in 4th QTR buddy seated next to me said "We hold on to the ball and we've got 'em" Couple plays later we fumble inside...

    Best Denzel Washington acting performances

Training Day He was one bad MOFO- BTW Denzel is scheduled to take on the lead role of Chris (Yul Brynner) for the upcoming Magnificent Seven remake in 2015. Director likely the same guy who for Training Day.

    Best Tom Hanks Acting Performance?

Castaway is IMO his best overall performance. Check out his scenes with Helen Hunt toward the end of the film, (when he has returned to Memphis) and he's terrific. Movie was OK, but he was brilliant. Forrest Gump- seems fashionable to diss this movie these days, but Hanks has certain scenes...

    A Troubling Trend

Re: Patterson My concern is less with his management of the "brand" than with his apparent willingness to allow MB one more year...i.e. "Let it ride" last December when the coaching change rumors were really swirling. Even with his boss Powers mandating MB stay on, how an incoming AD would...

Some of y'all need to tap the brakes

A+M will finish 7-5 this year, with likely embarrassing losses against a couple of SEC heavyweights. And yes, those will be on TV. Texas (hopefully) goes 8-4 or better and steadily improves during the year. In fact, I expect to see more improvement at QB and OL than in recent years. Aggies...

    2014 College Football Season

Who is this year's Auburn? The surprise team that may lose a game early, but comes on to make a major impact. How much controversy will we see in choosing the 4 playoff teams? Expect a couple of SEC teams to complain loudly about being left out. (Auburn, Alabama?) And how far do the Aggies...

Texas Football: Most Embarrassing Loss/Biggest Win?

Most embarrasing was the Miami Cotton Bowl in '91. We were ranked #3, Canes at #4. They ran up over 200 yards in penalties, physically dominated from literally the opening kick and 46-3 seemed merciful. And it was a cold, wet miserable day. Biggest win IMO is still 15-14 over Arkansas in the...

Top 10 games in TEXAS football history

One game that doesn't get mentioned often: 1968 Oklahoma Third game with James Street at QB. Texas at 1-1-1 and trying to run the new Wishbone offense while replacing Bill Bradley under center. OU scored late to lead 20-19. Texas gets ball on own 15 with 2:37 left. Street goes to the air...
