Spring Football 2026

Hell.... This time last year we were hearing how good everyone was....although you have an excellent point it will still not dampen my orange koolaide stupor....
This is a Spring tradition... Bobby Burton pumps so much sunshine into my posterior that I'm incensed and calling for coaches to be fired when we don't hang a hundy on our first opponent in the fall.

Wasn't we hearing how good Brooks looked this time last yr.
I was hearing that our OL would be much better at run blocking than previous years. Also, Stroh was so good we couldn't keep him off the field. And for years I heard that Neto Umeozulu was the best run blocking guard on the team.

I'm excited.... don't get me wrong. I've just learned to take the orange hype machine with a grain of salt.

Actually, I'd like some insight on what happened to Umeozulu.... I'm thinking it must have been some sort of disciplinary faux pas that logged him zero playing time last year - while our OL resembled a turnstile at an amusement park. It was just bizarre.

He had his chance during the first half of the season. It just didn't work out for him. The red-headed step child replaced him. That's how bad things were.

In fairness, they (Burton, OTF) did repeatedly talk about the lack of experience, that they weren't doing so well against our DL, they were alarmed when the starting five were not determined by the week of the first game . . .

We knew it was bad when Stroh was our best option at LG. I was convinced, and still am, that they needed to find out what they had in Stroh, sort of a sink or swim thing.

I will defer back to something I said last Spring. I was bothered (as well as others were) that we didn't take some OL in the portal for experience. Then later, Sark comes out and complains that Texas intentionally stuck to the stated salary cap while everyoone else didn't. I knew then we'd be spending plenty of money this go round. And we certainly did.

Notes from Burton, paraphrased

1. Defensive team speed is significantly improved. Biles, Masco and Simmons play fast. They're all playing faster.

2. Natural skeptisism about the OL, but they look much improved over this time last year. Key move was sliding Bakker over to RG and Sianni to RT.

3. Compared Derrek Cooper to Johnathan Brooks.

4. Team is healthy. Those recovering from surgeries are progressing well and will be ready by Fall.

5. Cam Coleman and Colin Simmons are two players who are just on another level than everyone else.

6. Masco is the steal of the portal class. Destinend to start either at CB or Nickel

7. Says this team, from top to bottom, is the most physically gifted team in recent Longhorns memory. He was told this by an outsider at practice, not staff.

8. Maraad Watson and Ryan Wingo mentioned as two players who have really improved over last year.

Burton said that SEVEN starters would come from the portal guys.....some guy named Bo will be the best corner since Deon ....
Now that's just flat out hyperbole. Prime was one of a kind.

Last year I read all this sunshine pumping and damned near had a heart attack when we lost to Ohio State. This year I am on 2 hypertension medications and a heart pill. I’m not believing any of it and will make up my own mind after we play Ohio State again. If we’re good enough, this season will be very special! If we’re not, it will be very disappointing. I’m just too old to keep believing the same BS every off-season. HOOK EM!!!!

This season, I expect to beat Ohio State. Our best team in years, loaded, at home, we have revenge factor.

Last year, I didn't expect to beat them. Young OL, their place, they were very very loaded.
