GAME THREAD – Texas vs K-State/UTSA

UTSA leaves a man on third. Top of the 8th with Schussler, A-Rod and Borba up.

7-1.

Top of the 8th,
Schluessler leadoff homerun. A Rod HBP. Borba line out to 3rd. Flores strikeout. Williams groundout

Now 7-2 UTSA

Bottom of the 8th,
Burns in to pitch.
Leadoff walk. Strikeout. Strikeout. Strikeout

After 8 complete UTSA leads 7-2

This team has pissed away a successful season in the last three weeks.
I think this team overperformed in the early to middle part of the season. They won a lot of games that we should have lost. Something crazy like 20+ come from behind wins. That got us to #1 overall and raised the expectation of this team quite a bit.

We came back to earth a bit and injuries to our top pitcher and hitter didn't help.

That early success put us in a very winnable position in the post-season and we should have been able to win this regional. So, I think it's both at the same time. Disappointing to lose like this but also a season where we did better than expected.

Good analysis, well stated.

Top of the 9th,
Farmer pitch hitting. Farmer pop out. Mendoza flyout. Galvan get on with a hot shot off the shortstop.
Belyeu last at bat with a 2 run homerun.

Is the UTSA team just peaking at the right time? Are they loaded with upper clansmen?
Not certain about either of those. I won't be surprised if they get swept by either UCLA or UC Irvine. We gave them way to many "free passes" whether error( just because something wasn't an error but bad fielding it counts the same), HBP, or walk and they took advantage to get scores off those. We left 14 on base on Saturday night and another 10 on Sunday night. While having 12 strikeouts on Saturday and another 11 on Sunday night. We should've blown these guys out. The question is do we have the players with the ability to block out the mental weakness that this team had. Gasparino seemed to not be focused for a month plus. Flores seemed more concerned with the draft status.

I was at the game Saturday. The lack of timely hitting by Texas drove me nuts.

Will be interesting to see what happens next year with Texas coaching getting an opportunity to improve the roster with “their” guys.

Pitching Depth was also lacking for this team, even before the Jared Spencer injury, though that of course made it much worse.

We had 1 reliable starter by the end (Harrison). Heck, we started relievers on Friday and then went back to those same arms in our 4th game. Ruger did a good job at eating innings in the K-state game but if it wasn't for our offense we would have lost based on giving up 8 runs.

Max Weiner and Schloss will be aggressive in strengthening our pitching this offseason I'm sure.

I think the team way overachieved this year. I don’t believe anyone picked Texas to win the $ec or do as well as they did. It also hurt that our best hitter and pitcher went down with injuries this killing the momentum this team had built.

As 1983 stated, can’t wait until Schloss gets his guys on the field.

Texas struggled down the home stretch and that didn't bode well from them at the end. In baseball, wins and losses don't matter as much as football. You want to get hot at the end.

Not sure what happened to our pitching at the end. Maybe tired arms or just facing hot bats. At any rate, decent season. Need a couple of starters for next season. It'll be interesting to see if we get portal guys or HS studs.
