First practice report I saw said watch out for freshman DE Taquon Graham. Said he is a total beast.
Also said Kyle Porter took the first snaps at RB with the first team.

Football (kind of) starts today!
Texas let the media enjoy the first 30 minutes of practice. Most of it was stretching and special teams, but we were able to see a few plays run and get a general idea of the depth chart at this moment.

I'm going to get the entire press conference up in a bit, but important notes:
On his first practice: "Nobody impressed. Nobody disappointed in shorts."
Due to new NCAA rules there are no two-a-days. Tom Herman didn't exactly seem to be a fan of the way it was implemented stating a problem with guys showing up July 31st, stating, "29 practices is 29 practices, but the kids reporting in July is a bit much." States he doesn't blame NCAA, but is looking for the NCAA to talk to coaches to clean up the process.
Earlier in the Spring, Herman stated that Shane Buechele needed to be more vocal and show more leadership. When asked today what he's seen so far out of his Shane, Tom Herman simply said, "That he has a voice." He went on to say that he believes leaders on the team like Connor Williams, Malik Jefferson, and PJ Locke already are vocal. Is encouraged by Shane. Also states Jerrod Heard is a locker room favorite and has encouraged him to start to be a more vocal leader.
For anyone who follows the program closely, they should know Tom Herman isn't a huge fan of no-pads practice when it comes to evaluating players... or in general. Says he is using the few days of no pads practices to instill a culture and drill in the new offense and defense. Although he also lamented that they'll have to re-teach it in pads.
According to Tom there was a lot of improvement of the team over the summer like increased verticals by 1.5" and 70lbs added to their average squat. There were more specific numbers, and I'll get them up here ASAP. He also reported the team collectively lost 500 pounds of body fat, and added 380 pounds of muscle mass.
When asked about his thoughts on the new found depth at the TE position with the new freshmen and Kellen Moore, Tom Herman said, "Theyre bodies... Scholarship worthy bodies." Seems he is still waiting until pads before he begins to even feel remotely good about that position.
Herman also reported that Chris Warren is sitting at 254lbs and he wants him at 250 by Maryland.
Also states Reggie Hemphill-Mapps is in store for a break out year.
Tom Herman is not very confident if Damion Miller will make it into the class. Says Jamari Chisholm will be on the team soon.

"Herman wasn’t the only one chewing out players in the very early portions of day one. If you’re not giving it 100 percent and doing it the way the coaches want, they’re going to let you know about it and they’re going to use some choice language while doing so."

I'm very surprised that Hager isn't starting. He was one of a select few productive players on defense last year.
Many new coaches announce that they are not viewing film from the previous season "so that everyone can have a clean slate." But, I rarely believe them. Moving Hager back to the middle and 2nd string status makes me believe this staff really didn't view last season's film.
I know it's early.... no reminder is necessary.
