Yea, thought it was weird most places there didn't have a bar. Who eats Tex-Mex with a margarita or beer? We found a place which was OK but nothing to brag about.

Its not Mexican, but it's some of the best fried catfish I've ever tasted and their chicken fried steak is awesome. Service is great. You step back in time when you walk inside.

Many, many moons ago I ran the newspaper in NB. I ate out for lunch almost every day. We did not hurt for lack of choice. But you pretty much zeroed in on the good ones and just rotated them every week. lol

Some of the better ones that I remember . . . 

1. Clear Springs (as stated above, awesome)

2. PJs - great chicken fried steak and one of the few places I knew of that still had PB&J listed on the menu.

3. Adobe Cafe & Cantina (Gruene) but there was also a second on on I-35 Business. A great Mexican food restaurant.

4. Granzine's BBQ – They were pretty good back then. Not to be confused with the meat market by the same name.

5. Treehouse Restaurant, . . not sure if they're still in business. Great place to get a sandwich and overlooking the Guadalupe.

6. Grist Mill (Gruene) – another great view of the Guadalupe. Food is good, service is great.

7. Landa Station – restaurant by day, bar by night. One of the largest chicken fried steaks I've ever seen and very tasty. Live music on Wednesday nights, at least back then.

8. Krause's (downtown) – I hear it went out of business a few years ago, then was reopened under new ownership. When I was there, it was THE place to get authentic German food. This is where I fell in love with genuine saurkraut and Bratwurst. There was one table in that place where you were not allowed to sit unless you and your family were members of one of the founding families. It was called the "Stammtisch Table."

9. New Braunfels Smokehouse – Back then, a nice restaurant with great food. The German potato salad was awesome. Today, it's a storefront operation. They're trying to maintain quality, but its not working, IMO. I ate there last year.

10. McBee's BBQ (Landa Dr) – It was fortunately located across the street from where I worked. Got to know those folks really well. They treated me like family. I'll never forget them. They made some pretty good Q. Not sure if they're still open these days.

By the way, Tejasrulz, the Seguin newspaper was our "sister publication" (under same ownership). I often spoke with the ME there. When we'd plan meetings, they always wanted to have them in NB because of the available lunch choices. lol

wTF, why not run by 7/11 for  a slurpee . . .

No such thing as a "good FROZEN" Rita . . ..you can have a great RITA over ice or up. . . .or you can have a slushee.

I think about this differently....I happen to think the best of the best Tex Mex will be served at places that dont even have a liquor license. The way I ALWAYS found good Tex Mex in the little towns when I was on the road was look for the place that had the crappiest looking building.None of this new type stuff...just the plain vanilla.If you are lucky enough to find one that doesnt have A/C, you are in heaven. If they offered sour creme on anything I left. Try that....it never fails.

I usually drink beer but when I go out I like a FROZEN Rita once in awhile. I find you get more drink for your money if you order the FROZEN vs over ice.

Oldhorn, I too have found that some "dives" have the best food. However the ladies in the group wanted drinks with their dinners and since you appear to be old and wise, you know you do as the women request.
