Make the new gym capacity 9,000.  I'm not kidding about this.  If there's anything worse than an apathetic fan base it is an apathetic fan base with 2 to 4 empty seats until you get to the next apathetic fan.  One thing I can say positive about Shaka is that he is still landing recruits who visit and see games played in front of a crowd filling less than half the seats!

I know, money, money, money concerns.... but you MUST get students closer to the court!  Stop worrying about offending season ticket donors who don't even care enough to show up or give away their tickets 75% of the time!
I agree, but the new arena will probably be a joint venture between ATX and UT.

They'll need a bigger building for "special events" if that plan comes to fruition. Attendance will continue to suck, too, if students can't get there easily from campus.

As I said, I am still holding out hope.... but my confidence level that these hopes will be realized has dwindled down to almost nothing.  I certainly wouldn't fire Shaka if I was the man deciding this kind of thing... but I would start coming up with a list of possible replacements.... just in case it is needed in the  future.
I'd give him 2017-18 to show dramatic improvement, otherwise I'd cut bait.

I go back to the Leon Black and Gregory Gym days of Texas Basketball.  Although we were not very good, we had great crowds and very much enjoyed sitting right behind an opposing teams bench or on the first row with my toes sticking over the out of bounds.  Harassed the opposing teams and the refs.  It was awesome.  Present day students need to experience this opportunity which I feel will extend to creating enthusiasm and enhanced performance from our team.

Texas students need to have courtside seating and at least the first 5 to 10 rows all the way around the court.  Although I am not an engineer, could a new arena be considered to be placed atop an existing structure such as a parking garage or some other avenue be explored?  Just some thoughts.  I do think the new arena needs to be on or as near campus as possible.

When I think about the basketball team, I keep going back to Smart demoting Morrell in favor of Jai Lucas. Last year's team, while inconsistent, certainly seemed to improve under the assistant coaching of Cason and Morrell. I understand retaining Lucas for recruiting reasons, but the coaching has gotten worse this year, and I don't think it's solely because of Smart. There was continuity with the trio of Cason, Morrell, and Smart that might have changed by promoting Lucas.

Here's a quick take on where Texas basketball has improved, and where it has been poor.

Decent or improved during the past two seasons:

Defensive system

Frontcourt offense - improvement from Ibeh, Cleare, Allen

Rebounding - improved after slow starts in both seasons

Bad or did not improve:

Turnovers

Shooting

Guard play

Offensive system

I'm not sure who's in charge of the guards and the offensive system, but I think that's where I think significant changes need to be made.

Isn't Foster a cousin to our former DB Brandon Foster? I keep seeing posts about Diggs being in his ear, but no mentions of Brandon? Would seem he would be a good recruiter for us as well if I am correct on the familial ties.

I just want to say this, if only to get off my chest. lol

Suzanne Haliburton is as dumb as a bag of rocks. I was shocked to discover this on the fly today. I've met dogs with more sense than that.

That is all.

lol

I've read her for many years in the AAS. It seems her role has diminished over the years, as in less high profile exposure/articles. It seems that occurred over the years as Golden and B Davis joined. She didn't bother or overly impress me. Curious as to what she said/wrote that you came to that opinion of her?

Okay, fill us in. Who is Suzanne Haliburton and what did she do or say that makes her as dumb as a bag of rocks?

Oh just got into a debate where she repeatedly employed the moving goalposts. It was sort of political so its probably best not to go into it here. By the time we were through, she was defending the very thing she had started out condemning. lol It started out with Cedric Golden, who asked me to provide a link to support what I was saying. I provided nine. So suddenly Haliburton appears out of nowhere like some "send the varsity in" thing. lol

NTG, Haliburton is a reporter for the American Statesman.
