"Early this morning, Cristo Rey Jesuit (Minneapolis, Minnesota) 2017 forward Jericho Sims committed to Texas fresh off an official visit this past weekend, he confirmed via text message. If you’ve been following along, the commitment isn’t a surprise.

During the early spring, Texas put eyes on Sims, and during the first July evaluation period, watched him extremely closely. Before a vast majority of the programs, like Kansas, Connecticut, Ohio State, Florida, Oregon and others, entered the race, the Longhorns made the extremely bouncy, 6-8 (6-9 is more accurate) Sims a top priority. It made sense. Sims has loads of potential and length, runs the floor like a guard, is surprisingly skilled, and can defend multiple positions. He checked pretty much all the boxes Shaka Smart looks for.

In late July during the Adidas Summer Championships, Sims, rated as the No. 146 prospect overall in the Rivals150 but a candidate to receive a bump in the next rankings, stated the only visit he knew he was taking was to Texas. That’s when chatter behind the scenes started to indicate that the Longhorns could be in the driver’s seat......"

Texas Longhorns Hoops lands second 2017 commitment in PF Jericho Sims

"Texas Longhorns basketball and head coach Shaka Smart landed its second commitment in the 2017 class. Power forward Jericho Sims from Cristo Rey Jesuit in Minneapolis committed to Texas following his official visit this past weekend. Sims was reportedly considering the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Kansas Jayhawks, and Ohio State Buckeyes, among other offers, before his pledge to Texas.

Sims currently ranks 73rd on the 247 Composite Rankings, making recent splashes and rises on recruiting Top 100 lists after a strong grassroots run on the Adidas Circuit with D1 Minnesota. Darrin Horn, Smart's big man guru assistant, is widely credited with this recruitment. Landing Sims, a Minnesota native and Golden Gopher legacy, is a nice tip of the cap to Smart and Co.'s national recruiting prowess.

I hadn't tracked Sims' recruitment before this, but the scouting report and internet videos profile him as an interior big -- rim runner, finisher, rebounder, shot blocker. ESPN's Reggie Rankin compares him to Tristan Thompson ($), which should gruntle Texas hoops fans. Most importantly, for acolytes of the Fro Bros School for Kids Who Can Jump Good (led by professors Jarrett Allen and James Banks), Sims' hair game is strong.

Sims joins fellow forward Royce Hamm in the 2017 class. At this stage, Sims looks like a multi-year guy who could use a small growth spurt to bang inside and/or the ability to extend a few feet outside with a jumper and a post game. A Banksian senior season would be promising.

It'll also be interesting to see how this affects the recruitment of P.J. Washington, a Texas staff (and fanbase) favorite who also plays the 4 and is scheduled to officially visit Austin in late October. Texas has the scholarship numbers and needs frontcourt depth in the 2017 class, and landing three versatile 6' 8" guys would not suck.

Welcome to the Forty, Jericho. Hook 'em."

4-star PF Jericho Sims commits to Texas

An official visit over the weekend helped the ‘Horns land the bouncy forward.

"Texas Longhorns head coach Shaka Smart has a second pledge in the 2017 recruiting class and another athletic forward in Minneapolis (Minn.) Cristo Rey Jesuit product Jericho Sims, who took an official visit to Austin over the weekend:

The 6’8, 190-pounder was originally thought to be high on the hometown Minnesota Golden Gophers, but the persistent pursuit of Smart and his assistant helped the ‘Horns land the top player in Minnesota.

Given the fact that Sims is a Golden Gophers legacy and has a brother who played for MInnesota, that was no small feat for the Longhorns.

“I thought it was really good, good time in Austin,†Sims told Orangebloods.com after his visit. “The coaches were basically with me a lot of the time, they cared me about me coming down there and wanted me to come down. They really like me as a person. I’m their main guy. Just had a good time with coach (Shaka) Smart, coach (Darrin) Horn, met the whole staff. They want me down there.â€

Sims also appreciated Smart’s “realness†and built a relationship with the current players while he was in Central Texas — as with the football program under head coach Charlie Strong, the players as often as effective or more effective than the coaches in recruiting.

A consensus four-star prospect, Sims is the No. 73 player overall and the No. 15 power forward nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He also held nearly 20 offers, including invitations to play at UConn, Florida, Iowa State, Kansas, Memphis, and Ohio State.

The recruitment of Minnesota’s top player took off in July on the adidas circuit as part of a talented D1 Minnesota squad.

An athletic prospect who has the quickness of a guard, Sims has the length and overall athleticism that Smart desires in his frontcourt players — he’s a guy who projects favorably as someone who can excel in the open court, whether he’s getting out in transition to finish with resounding dunks or disrupting opponents in the full-court press.

Since Sims is a late riser who is used to playing with talented teammates, he also possesses a considerable amount of upside and has experience doing the little things to help his team win.

Sims joins Houston Aldine forward Royce Hamm in the 2017 Texas recruiting class."

Some more highlights on Jericho Sims.  He runs the court well, jumps high, seems to have good lateral movement ... and he has a funky, low release on his jump shot, but he seems to be able to put it in the basket, nevertheless.  One thing is certain ... he will add continuity to our newly minted Fro Bro Tradition !!!   I like the way JC25 put it above, "Most importantly, for acolytes of the Fro Bros School for Kids Who Can Jump Good (led by professors Jarrett Allen and James Banks), Sims' hair game is strong."

I really want to go some basketball games this year. Especially after seeing Smart and his players at the ND game.

Speaking of those basketball players, can you find them in the below picture?
