I was talking with a good friend before the tournament started, but this was some type of ride for Shaka in year one.

Lost his leading scorer and rebounder in late December, his starting PG was dealing with plantar fasciitis since about January, Holland was mentally checked out the first half of the season dealing with stuff back home, Yancy's concussion, the China trip, the Bahamas trip, new system and so on. All of that in the middle of arguably the toughest schedule in the country. I have no doubt this had to be Shaka's most stressful coaching job so far.

Honestly, I thought we were headed to the NIT once Ridley went down. Will I call this season a success, probably not based on Texas standards. But, we were only going to go so far with the limitations outlined above. Call it an excuse, whatever, it's just the reality.

As for next year I have a few thoughts.

1) It would not surprise me if Yancy transfers. The 3 FR (Roach, Davis, Mack) were all getting more run this year.
2) Cleare is a decent player, but not a starting caliber big. Way too slow in this era of basketball. Stretch bigs just abuse him. When other teams see Cleare they immediately go to the pick and roll game.
3) Which brings me to my next point. We need to find a PFish mold via transfer that can play some 4/5. Someone similar to Mo Allie Cox for VCU. This is something we were desperately lacking this year and what makes Shaka's system go.
4) I would love for Taylor to return but Texas will be perfectly fine with Andrew Jones and Roach manning the point next year. Of course having Taylor return would be huge as this would allow someone like Roach/Jones to play off the ball.
5) Eric Davis is this real deal. He hit a FR slump late in the year, but he's a shooter and we need shooters.
6) We need to sign Jarrett Allen. Even with Allen we need to go get another PFish/C mold via transfer.
7) If we are looking at other transfers, a slashing wing would be ideal.
8) I expect us to go much smaller next year. A lot of 4 guard lineups similar to what OU ran at times this year.
9) There will be a talent upgrade with Davis, Jones, Roach, and Mack stealing minutes from Holland/Felix.
10) This team can be very good with a PF that can pick, pop and roll. The problem this year was Ibeh setting a lot of screens in the pick and roll game allowed teams to sag off. Getting a PF is critical.
11) Ibeh/Cleare just didn't give us enough offensively to justify playing big IMO. Ibeh was obviously an asset defensively at times.....but when you are only getting 8 points in a game from your bigs when you are actually a pretty big team, that's a problem. That was kind of the issue this year with the roster. The roster was too overloaded with bigs that can't score (Ibeh/Cleare). Texas was better suited to go small like it did tonight where it played Lammert at the 5. While not ideal, it can work really well if you get a legit mold like Mo Allie Cox.
12) Texas is fixing to have shooters/scorers on campus. Holland and Yancy just don't have enough juice on the offensive end unfortunately

Getting a big like Allen with the good guard play next year would be exactly the type of team Shaka wants.

I'm not one that gets overly caught up in recruiting rankings, but to a point I think the roster maxed out in terms of talent. Texas had talent no doubt about it, but IMO the current roster was only going to take us so far. Obviously, some of the recruiting rankings below were misses. Some players were undervalued and some players were overvalued. But generally speaking there's a pretty decent baseline average here that gives some gauge of the talent level.

Upperclassmen
Yancy #109 composite player
Felix #99
Holland #258
Taylor #301
Lammert #147
Ibeh #58
Ridley #20
Cleare #41

-129.12 national average

Underclassmen/incoming recruits:
Mack #58 composite player
Roach #46
Davis #51
Banks #64
Young #100
Jones #32
*Allen #23

-53.42 average

From a purely recruiting perspective the underclassmen are a lot more talented than the upperclassmen. Granted, recruiting rankings aren't always accurate. It will be interesting to see how the roster progresses under Shaka. In terms of talent, I think this year's roster probably would have maximized it's talent at about the Sweet 16 level if everything else fell into place (i.e Ridley and Taylor injuries).

I think Shaka will do outstanding things at Texas but he needs to finish this class with a bang. there are still big holes at SF, PF & C positions with only Mack and Cleare on roster. Texas needs to sign Allen and 2 other bigs and a SF or 2. Cleare is not a player that needs to play more than 5 minutes a half to use his fouls up. Mack just needs to get more consistent. not sure if Yancey or Taylor return but they are needed as both can play

Jarrett Allen is a critical recruitment for Texas, IMO.
Yep.

I don't mean to trash anyone, but Cleare isn't very good. I'm not sure why Barnes went after Cleare. Cleare had to play 12 minutes a game this year due to Cam's injury, which is way too many unfortunately.

We for sure need Allen with Banks, but also need to go after a transfer. I'm pretty sure a transfer is already locked up based on what some other sites have been saying.

We need at least three athletic big men. Lack of athleticism really hurt us this year, particularly after we lost Ridley.

Who is it?

Agree about Cleare. He works, but you can see he just isn't on the same level.

Well, that's a pretty good post.

I have actually been working on my review article. It's more big picture for Texas but this is a great inward look at the team. I disagree about losing Taylor not being a big deal, it would be a massive deal just because the leadership he brings to the team and I don't think Roach is ready to take the mantle yet.

Agree on Taylor. Kid is sick quick with the ball on the floor. A great element for Shaka's chaos scheme.

If Taylor leaves I don't think Roach will be the PG. I think it will be Andrew Jones with Roach playing more of the 2, kind of like he did this year.

Andrew Jones is the #32 composite player in the country, and that's probably a little low. Several people I've talked to think he's arguably the best player in the state which includes #3 Fox and #15 Ferguson.

Jones will be on the court somewhere next year (even if Taylor stays). Jones will be the most talented player on our roster the minute he walks through the door, and it won't even be close. Sure there will be some freshman ups and downs, but Texas will be just fine with Jones and Roach manning the point.

Granted, there's no doubt getting Taylor back would be great.

A couple other things.

1-It looks like we have interest in David Osetkowski. Plays forward and is transferring from Tulane. Goes along with my thoughts above that we need to go after a PFIsh mold in the transfer market.

2-Tyson Jolly recently decommitted from Cal (shooting guard in the '16 class). Last couple of crystal balls on 247 have been in Texas' favor. Something to watch out for.

It seems pretty clear that players want to play for Shaka. He's young, energetic, and he's definitely not afraid to play the best player. He's also innovative. He's going to be successful. Glad he's a Longhorn.

Hook 'em!

4 CBs for Jarrett Allen to Texas today.

Would not be shocked to see a commitment soon.
I wonder why 4 CBs were thrown out today for Texas? Did guys 2-4 copy guy 1, or did they all get some info of sorts to make their predictions? Does anyone have knowledge of any comments by Allen that prompted the positive response to the good guys? My guess is we won't know, but sounds good to me!
