Debate - Pros and Cons - Nick Saban

I have Saban 3rd on my list, behind Harbaugh and Tomlin. If not for his age he might be higher.

NS might be the biggest "splash" hire in the history of college football -I remember when aggy hired Jackie for the unheard of (at the time) sum of $250K/yr.

Sherrill had just finished back-to-back seasons of 11-1 and No. 2 in the polls. That certainly had the feel of a hired gun going to aggyland to turn around the gomer fortunes.

As unbelievable as a Saban hire would be, I can't imagine him being willing to announce it until after the NCG. That means he wouldn't be coming here until less than a month

before NSD. That would be a negative.

I hear some of the cons are he cost too much $. We have paid a coach $5+ million for 4 years($20million) to suck. also, isnt not like we as fans are paying the coach. We have more $ than any other school and so we have more $ to pay a good coach. And if we get back to the top we will make even more $ that will pay for the coach.

Another con is his age, 62. IF he can still coach at 25 or 68, i dont care as long as he is a good coach. Some of you want a good young coach but then say he is only good bc he had a good QB(Sumlin and Strong). Well if you want a young guy, you take the risk that he is good bc of 1 or 2 players. Coaches need good players to be good coaches. We cant have it both ways. I will take Saban for 5 years and wining some Big 12 titles and maybe a national title.

A hired gun is someone that comes for a year maybe 2. Saban is a good HC we would pay a good amount of $ for to help us win games. Isnt that what every school is doing? Bama, tOsu, USC, etc call all pay their coach or Saban the same thing we offer him.

I keep hearing this "buying a championship" thing.
Isnt that what every premier football school tries to do?
Agreed. Are we payng Mack for another reason that I am not aware of? I mean he gets 5.4 per for championships and he has failed miserably.

Good stuff. One thing you know you are getting from Saban, Jimbo Fisher or Briles is that they are winning with players that they have recruited and developed. A guy like Sumlin could be a good coach, but when you inherit Keenum and then luck into Manziel it's not nearly as apparent. Especially knowing that he didn't even recruit either of them.

If I'm going after a coach I want someone who has developed talent and won with it. That definitely slims the pool down. Urban Meyer is about the only coach that I'd be ok with hiring who hasn't been at his current school for very long, but his track record speaks for itself. No thanks on Sumlin or Strong.

Pros -

1) You get a winner that will propel the university to 1-3 championships while he's here. He will coach like he has coached at all major universities, to win!

2) We get to laugh at Alabama and A&M for years!

Cons- where do I start lol!

1) He's going to be here for a max of 5 years IMO.

2) He's a mercenary, he coaches for record breaking and his own ego!

- Thus, he is not a coach like DKR that will go down as a great in our history books, he will be seen as a mercenary that helped Texas out of a rough patch!

- I think Bama has already made a huge mistake by idolizing him as a legend there, he will drop them like a used prom date!

3) He will ask for complete control over the program and tell the LHN to F off, thus rubbing our board memebers the wrong way.

4) There is no such thing as an AD when Saban is around.

5) He's going to be chasing the 3 championships from 3 different programs record when he comes to Texas, not to preserve our program!

Lastly, If he does come, get ready to have a standby coach if he announces his resignation at the end of any year!

good post

cons:

1-assumption, maybe coaches a bit more

2-all coaches are hired to come in and win games, dont let Mack fool you. We can hire X coach and you can call him a mercenary.

i think we are ok if a coach coaches to break records and make himself feel good.

3-Mack has complete control of the program, that why people around Belmont hesitate to fire him and havent yet said "This is your last year here, weather you like it or not." He man not want to do LHN, i dont care, come in win games, dont get caught for cheating and leave in a few years. Good bye, thats his job.

4-an AD looks over all sports teams, not just football. Saban handles football, makes it nicer for the AD to have a competent coach he doesnt need to baby. The AD you hire is for you Lastly comment.

5-THIS IS A GREAT THING. Please come in and win 3 TITLES, especially in the 5 years he is here. That automatically does what we need for the program. I find it very funny you think this is a bad thing?

when you go into work, you are not going there to preserve your company. You are going in to do a job they pay you for and do it to the best of your ability. IF you suck you get fired, if you do really really well, another company will see that and offer you more $ to do that job well for them. If you are 60 and want to retire at 65 thats your choice but you will benefit the company for 5 year, not go an preserve them.
