Looks like we dodged a bullet with Soso Jamabo

I cannot imagine what he was doing in Kemp at that hour.  If you look at a map of the area, you will see Cedar Creek Lake where there are quite a few lake houses, some of them are very nice.

The area is a network of backroads and lakehouses.  One four lane highway runs through the area to Dallas, about 45 minutes away.  Plano is probably an hour away.  Driving those roads under the influence is a really bad idea.

...Our guys are tweeting about it.  He made a bad decision, and he only had about 6 weeks before leaving for UCLA.

Couldn't believe reading this thread this morning. I grew up in Kemp and have been here the last two days visiting my father.

Kemp only has two part-time police officers. He obviously drove through here at the wrong time!

Yes, Kemp is a rundown small town, now.  Water issues and other problems with the infrastructure.

I feel bad that the kid made a bad decision. I don't know that it means he has any character issues or flaws. I just means he screwed up. He got drunk and drove. I have made some bad decisions when I was young too, so I am just going to wish him the best of luck and hope he has learned a valuable lesson.

He was not charged with intoxication over the limit. According to the article minor in possession and consumption.

It's been a rundown small town for many years. But quite a few improvements over the last couple of years with a new mayor.

Also charged with evading arrest with a vehicle, which is a 3rd degree felony I believe. That will be the charge that matters.

meh, I did that shit every weekend when I was his age.  Just didn't get caught.
None of those charges are serious except the evading arrest with a vehicle. That's where he really screwed up. Like I said above, pretty sure that's a 3rd degree felony.

Because of his age and lack of criminal history I suspect it will all get charged down to misdemeanors and or deferred adjudication.

Biggest question I have is why was he here?

My guess would be he was trying to obtain the undefeated.

But what is considered "evading arrest with a vehicle" even mean? Did he not pull over fast enough? I know one time a cop threatened me with that because he thought I took too long to pull over yet I told him there was nowhere for me to pull over but he thought otherwise. Luckily I didn't go to jail that night but sometimes it's quite BS IMO.

I hope that SoSo comes out of this just fine.  He seems like a very personable kid with a bright future.

Bear19, when did you live in Kemp? I was the editor of the (now defunct) local newspaper (Cedar Creek Pilot) for several years. I covered a lot of Kemp sporting events when Cedric Hodge was tearing it up and Glen West was the football coach. Also covered a lot of baseball games when Scotty Tanksley (RIP) was s stud pitcher there. Back then in the early 1990s, Kemp was pretty solid in all sports.

I played at Kemp with Cedric Hodge's uncle. Graduated in 68.

My nephew is Nick Vilbas, who also played for Glenn West.

More info from someone in a position to know.

The arresting officer saw soso swerve into the opposing lane and put his flashers on figuring the person might be drunk. Soso then briefly sped up to give his occupants time to dispose of their liquor out the windows. He then stopped a short distance later. The officer said he was very cooperative and he did not appear to be drinking at all. Others in the vehicle were drinking and some or all were minors.

I suspect this will go away as a misdemeanor fine. Or at worst deferred adjudication. Someone involved said he seemed to be a very nice kid.
