2015 Recruiting Season is in full swing

I agree.  He is underrated.  Maybe the most underrated player in the state.

But out LB depth is pretty sad too.  We must load up this class.

Malik Jefferson wins the Butkus Award.

Article title from the future? No, he just won the high school version of the prestigious award. I’m here in Mesquite covering the award ceremony.

Other nominees were Justin Hilliard (5-star committed to Ohio State), Jerome Baker (high 4-star committed to Ohio State), John Houston (high 4-star likely headed to USC) and Leo Lewis (high 4-star committed to Ole Miss). Each player is rated within the Top 70 in the nation.

Past winners:
2013 – Raekwon McMillan, Liberty County
2012 – Jaylon Smith, Bishop Luers High School
2011 – Noor Davis, Leesburg High School
2010 – Tony Steward, Menendez
2009 – Jordan Hicks, Lakota West
2008 – Manti Te’o, Punahou High School

Immediately you see Jordan Hicks, a player Malik spent considerable time with this past weekend on his official visit to Texas.

Also interesting, perhaps Malik’s greatest on-field analog, Jaylon Smith, is a past winner. Smith is now a bedrock for Notre Dame’s defense.

Now the question remains, will Malik attempt to follow Texas-Ex Derrick Johnson’s footsteps and try to win the collegiate version of the award in Austin? Johnson received the award in 2004.

Good piece by Ian Boyd on Texas recruiting the 3-3-5, especially if you like Xs and Os

http://insidetexas.com/inside-gameplan-3-3-5/

Foxes/edge players: In the 4-3 Under, you essentially have two of these players, the Sam linebacker and the weakside end. In the 3-3-5 you probably only have one unless someone is cross-trained and versatile enough to also play mike or will linebacker. This is the premier pass-rush position in the defense and the guy who gets to come flying off the edge the most but the 3-3-5 is also flexible enough to get him involved by stunting him into whichever gaps or parts of an offensive protection set are least equipped to handle him.

Inside linebackers: Texas is looking for guys that are athletic enough to be able to stunt and attack the line of scrimmage or drop out and play some man coverage against backs and tight ends. They do typical linebacker reading and plugging but athleticism comes before classic linebacker skills and instincts on the wish list.

You have to remember Stevenson was a Mack recruit. That doesn't mean Stevenson is a bad player, just committed to a different coach.

Not so much related to Texas, but JUCO QB Jake Hubenak, received his first D1 offer today from San Diego State. This is a guy that many Longhorn fans were hoping we'd bring in next year.

2016 will be interesting.

RB: Catalon, Foreman, Houston, and Johnson. We will get one out of Warren, Brosette and Soso (if not 2). I'm guessing we only take 1 RB in 2016, as we will have at least 5 young RBs on the roster.

WR: Foreman, Joe, Oliver, and Gray are all young guys. Throw in maybe Newsome, Burt, Johnson, and/or Thomas. We will have at least 5 young WRs on the roster. We might once again only take 2 or so WRs in 2016, depending on how these young guys look.

QB: Gentry, Heard, Merrick, and Swoopes. I think there's a good chance we add another QB via transfer. I'm thinking we only take 1 QB in 2016 too.

We have a bunch of young guys coming in on the O-line, but I think Texas will load up on the O-line again in 2016. IMO the O-line/TE is where the focus will be in 2016.

Burton thinks we have a good chance of landing Brosette, Warren and Soso. I don't think we take all 3 though, if that's a possibility.

That would be a huge haul if true. I don't think we get all three though. I'd love Brosette and Soso the most of the three but even Warren has incredible ability. I'd be happy to get two.

To be clear - Burton doesn't think we get all three, only that we are in on all three and is confident we get Warren.  He doesn't think Warren and Soso will sign at the same school.

Chris Vaughn is still in Florida and will make an in-home  with four-star receiver commit John Burt on Wednesday evening in Tallahassee.

On same day, he will see 2015 DB DeAndre Baker.  We offered back in August but Davis has not visited Austin.  He is currently a Georgia commit, but let's see if he sets up an OV.
Vaughn saw Davante Davis in Miami yesterday.
