Former UT quarterback Shannon Kelley on how to prepare a 2nd string QB

Good write up! It will be interesting to see what kind of gameplan they have for Swoopes. Swoopes has a nice catchable deep ball, but seems to throw darts on short and intermediate passes whether needed or not. That could lead to turnovers. Swoopeswhile big is not a quick shifty runner, but seems to be good at rolling out. I think the idea of 2 levels of receivers on a roll out would be a good play for him, especially if they have a zone called.

The one thing we do know is this next game will not be boring!!

Great write-up with some key information. I like the idea of roll-outs for Swoopes. It really utilizes one of his strengths in regards to his legs.

I also think the screen calls will be very important at times. I was actually very surprised that we didn't see at least one screen against North Texas. I expect that we'll see a few.

Shannon - There are multiple sites that would be delirious about having this kind of insight provided to them.  I am thrilled to death you are providing this kind of info to us "armchair" quarterbacks.  Everything you have said is clear as a bell and logical.  I like the way you have made it understandable for us poor shmucks.

Thanks again and looking forward to more of this great stuff from you.

As for Swoopes, it appears to me that roll outs play to his wheelhouse, anyway.  Athletically, I think he is superior to Heard, but cerebrally, I think Heard has it over him.

Shannon, there are reports out there on other sites eluding to Heard possibly getting into the game this weekend for a package or two.  Your breakdown answers the questions on how 1st team practice reps are distributed, but do you personally feel that Heard gets into the game this weekend?  What type of situation would dictate this type of a move by the coaching staff?

You can expect a watered down version from their playbook. However, I have never seen Swoopes play. I am generically addressing the issue as how staffs handle back-ups. I do not know Swoopes understanding of the game (football IQ) or what he can really do.

One would think he has things he can do well, and you can bank on it, that is exactly what will be called. Coach Strong will manage this kid very tightly. He will NOT ask him to do something that he does not do well.

Thanks for the kind words!

Great stuff Shannon.  Having you and Coleman on this board is very valuable from a former player standpoint.

Thank you. Screens didn't need to be called against a team they were beating soundly. no need to unveil different packages and plays when you have a game under control. Screens are utilized when the defense is aggressive and are getting into your backfield and creating timing issues. They simply slows the aggressiveness of the defense down. If you can get out clean to the second level (passed the D-Line and into LB'er territory), with your O-Line leading the way, then you have a real chance of making the third level (Safeties) miss, and take it to the house.

Another thought is that some O-Line coaches do not like screens, because they are very expensive! To run them affectively, you have to practice many reps with the timing of the RB and the O-Line. That can take a full 10 minute period each practice. Again, some like them and some do not.

I do not know about their football IQ..Tell you who does know? Charlie Strong and his staff knows, and they will play the QB's according to how far along the kids are in the playbook, who can make plays, who gets the ball out fast and affectively, who can read and understand the design of the play, who can move the chains, and who has leadership skills.

I have heard they both can play. We shall see. When the lights come on, the whole game changes! The question is, who can handle it!

Frankly, If one is better than the other at certain things, they may very well want to get him some game time reps and see how he responds. Swoopes may play lights out and Heard might not get in. on the other hand, if Swoopes is struggling, then Coach Strong may want to get Heard in while the game still matters.

I do not believe you will see a rush to judgement, unless Swoopes just can't get it done. Another thought might be, "let's distribute the game among both of them, to help alleviate the pressure for just one guy that has no real experience"..Another might be "this is why he was recruited, so throw him to the dogs and see if this is a kid we can build a future around"..

Lots of different scenarios, but all of them, this staff can handle very well!!
