Chalk Talk

Thanks for the article, Coleman! I had no clue that they approved a rule outlawing blocks below the knees outside of the box. That's a pretty big rule!

Of note: approximately 1/3 of the targeting calls in FBS play last year were reversed. In the Big 12, half of them were reversed last year.

Great article, Feeley!

Good stuff again Coleman. Back in the day, you could hit pretty much anyone if they were facing you. Crack-back blocks were changed when I played to help preserve the guy at the end of the D-line. Nothing below the waist I think!

Rule changes to...preserve the safety of players...or preserve the profits of the NFL?

I'm not sure I care if it does both things! Players are safer and football continues.

Then they still marked off 15 yards.

One of the dumbest rules ever.
The odd thing about it was that NO ONE liked the way the rule was enforced... IMO the penalty was enforced to try and change the culture of the sport instead of just the rules.

TASO official here.  As y'all may already know, TEXAS high schools play by NCAA Rules.

Blocks below the waist are illegal by backs and receivers outside the low blocking zone (tackle box as it applies to this rule is somewhat of a misnomer) while the ballcarrier is inside the box.  The Low Blocking Zone is defined as 7 yards to right & left of the snapper, 5 yards downfield, and to the endline behind the line of scrimmage.  Once he's outside the box, WRs can cut defenders at 10-2 o'clock.

Basically, we're trying to take out the dangerous blindside, crackback blocks below the waist that cause injuries.  Here's a link to website, Rule Tool that is a great resource for NCAA Rules questions  http://ruletool.info/topic/blocking/
