The SEC thread

... they have a great responsibility that goes with it, to do what's right for college football and not to do anything that just benefits two conferences.

Another angle on this is that Nick Saban made a comment on the Pat McAfee Show Istating that Vanderbilt is the "only place in the SEC that's not hard to play", before Alabama lost. That likely gave Vanderbilt some extra motivation. Saben wasn't the coach at the time but I believe he was an advisor.

Seems way smarter to get all of the coaches and players to only point out the strengths of opponents, and show complete respect.

Agree. No need to give them extra incentive.

Seems like Alabama is having a hard time keeping up with the arms race. Maybe this could be part of why Saban retired, and unless they can find some more money, will be a problem moving forward.

"But for a department staring down a $28 million loss in 2023-24 and a $12 million hit the year before, this moment is less about celebration and more about survival."

This is just the start. There are going to be a lot of other smaller schools to join soon. They won't be able to compete with the big spenders. It all comes down to how much are donors willing to give.

I really think the way Sark and Texas are handling NIL is prudent. Come to Texas for development and a chance to go pro. You'll get NIL but if you want a big payday, go somewhere else.

It's definitely going to make it very difficult on schools with less available money.

To an extent, Sark can sell recruits on development and culture, but at the end of the day, if you want the top dogs, you need to give them a competitive compensation package.

Wow. That's great.

A little surprised that Taaffe is ranked that high. He must have really improved, which speaks volume in our development. Also really surprised that Manning is in the top 50. He really hasn't been a starter. I know he's got potential but I feel others have proven themselves on the field (BUT, I haven't seen the whole list).

Rankings systems like PFF really like Taaffe. It is heavily reliant on objective measures and Taaffe is a guy who more often than not is in the right place at the right time. Subjectively he may not have the look of a stud DB, but he is a really good and really consistent player.

As for Arch at 50 - don't be shocked if they fudged the number a bit to at least get him on the list. Being objective is nice and all but the Arch name drives a lot of clicks these days.
