Hornsports Trivia: Who am I?

That team pictured above is the 1973 4A State Champion John Tyler Lions.

That fellow in the bottom row wearing #20 is Earl Campbell.

I had a coworker that played against that team and Earl. He said it was funny many guys “tripped” right before having a chance to tackle Earl right has he broke free and started to run hard in an open field. Guess they wanted to live to see Saturday morning

"When Earl ran, snot flew"

I remember them ,first time really saw speed in state.

Are you talking about Yates or D'field?

Daingerfield won state in track the same year they won state in football ('83). The Daingerfield secondary was also the state champion 4 x 400 relay.

I watched Daingerfield beat Sweeney in Waco for the title... 42-0 I think. They were definitely a machine.

I was there that night, too. Waco had a little snow on the ground. Very cold that night.

I was covering the game for the local paper and in the 4th, left the pressbox and went down to the field. It was just utter domination on both sides of the ball.

When I was a senior there at DF, we had 4-5 sophomores who were brought up to the varsity. We had a freshman who was brought in who was the starting TB when DF won state in '83. Me and the other seniors kind of took offense to their presence on the varsity as that had not been done in many years. But after one or two practices, we all agreed those guys were players. We knew when they were seniors they'd be tough to beat. Just a large collection of special athletes.

Seems like all fast on Yates.I did not know D'field won track. My brother loved track. He said could really see the athletes.Oh maybe first saw little speed was when De kalb met the integrated Plano team. DK didn't integrate till 66. Then there was wds D'field first State championship against Lufkin Dunbar, there was some speed on rain drenched field

I was at the Lufkin Dunbar game, played in Nacodoches. We were all soaked that night but we didn't care. Dunbar was a very good team. Daingerfield's HC then was Bill Lane, who accepted a job at Baylor the very next season.

DeKalb was in our district when I played. They had a cat named Christ Vaughn who was the leading 100 m sprinter in East Texas. I got to see that speed up close, . . until he started pulling away from me lol
