The Texas Longhorns (13-6, 2-4) opened conference play against rival Texas A&M (15-4, 4-2) on January 4th. Headed into that contest, Rodney Terry’s nonconference record on the season sat at 11-2. After a tie ballgame at halftime in Reed Arena, the Aggies pulled away in the second half en route to an 80-60 victory. The game was the first of three straight losses for the Longhorns, who next fell to Auburn and Tennessee before earning their first SEC win on the road at Oklahoma.

Five conference games later, Texas sits at 2-4 in SEC play looking to build off a strong performance against No. 22 Missouri in which they won 61-53. They are set to face the Aggies again, this time at Moody Center, with hopes of evening the record this season in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown.

A win would give the Longhorns another much needed Quad 1 win, helping to bolster their case for a spot in the NCAA Tournament in March. According to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, Texas currently sits as a “Last Four In” team, meaning there is little room for error in the next month of basketball.

The Longhorns, who are home underdogs in this game, have won 10 consecutive home contests against Texas A&M and 23 of their last 24 against the Aggies at home. This dates all the way back to the 1987-1988 season. Texas A&M makes their first trip back to Austin since 2012.

Game Notes:

  • The matchup against No. 13 Texas A&M marks the sixth time in the last seven games in which Texas will face an AP-Top 25 ranked opponent. The Longhorns are 1-5 in those games.
  • Senior Arthur Kaluma is playing solid basketball for the Longhorns as he notched his fifth double-double against No. 22 Missouri on Tuesday. Kaluma, who leads the team in rebounds, had 14 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
  • SMU Transfer Zhuric Phelps averages 20.7 points in SEC contests for the Aggies and is just one of four players in the conference with 100+ total points in conference games
  • Texas leads the all-time series with Texas A&M 138-87

If the Horns can pull this one off it would be a really big win. Texas has just 2 Quad 1 wins and needs more headed down the stretch.

Don't expect Chendall Weaver to play today. He is likely out again.
Arthur Kaluma is a game-time decision. He's playing great basketball - Horns need him in this one if he can go.

aggy 43 Horns 25 at the half

aggy is shooting 53% from 3 land, 48% overall and they’re also out rebounding us. Not looking good

As someone else said, we have entered the Shaka Smart zone. This is fools gold. RT will deliver hope and a dose of disappointment.

ask any Aggie about Buzz Williams and they will tell you the same thing.

Terry deserves a ton of credit for winning this game in comeback fashion, without his leading rebounder and second-leading scorer playing.

For a team that couldn’t play much in second halves, they have back-to-back wins over ranked teams. Kudos to the players and staff.
