I figured we needed a thread specifically dedicated to Arch since he seems to be the lightning rod for this Texas team.
Here you can cheer or jeer our QB. Critique or laud his play.
I'll start.
170 yards in his first start as the guy. Playing in Columbus against the #2 team in the country. Not a great or bad start.
295 yards against SJ St. Good game.
114 yards against UTEP. Completely inexplicable. Terrible game.
309 yards against SHSU. Good stat line.
Only one bad game and people want to write him off. I never bought into the Arch for Heisman narrative. That will come next year. Arch will have an above average year. I don't know if that will lead to the playoffs.

If Arch continues to miss wide open receivers, then by all means, give Caldwell a shot.

Arch unfortunately doesn’t look like he’s been coached to play QB. I’m sure a lot is mental too but man he throws an ugly ass style. How has he not been developed the last few years in our system?

I don’t think we are going anywhere this season so let him play. Hopefully next year he can really improve.

He seems to always want to wait for the deep routes to develop, even when we have receivers running open in the underneath routes. He needs to come off the deep routes quicker and just get the ball out, especially with how the OL is playing.

Quinn was 6th round draft Choice. Each looked good last year against in all three starts. It doesn't look like Ssrk is QB guru we was led believe. So makes me wonder about Dia Bell? PS:Arch played behind much better OL & he was not starter

Ewers was a 7th rounder because he had too many strip sacks at inopportune times and he was injury prone.
Edit: Per ESPN, Ewers was selected by Miami in the seventh round of April's draft. He has a good arm, but his 2024 and career passing efficiency was underwhelming across the board. He finished his career (36 starts) with below-average marks relative to this class, despite a conservative 7.8 aDOT and having rarely seen pressure (class-low 24% rate). Ewers was not a factor with his legs (2.0 carries per start in his career). He'll battle Zach Wilson for work behind Tua Tagovailoa.

All things considered, he's played only 4 games against P4 teams. Given the struggles of the OL, laying out judgement this early is silly, but Arch has also shown us that he misses the easy stuff too. Practice experience isnt game experience, so im hopeful that he only gets better...time will tell.

Its a shame we'll basically have to throw a season to get him that experience though. In our preseason prediction thread, I said growing pains in real game action would be a factor and got lambasted for it.

I don't see too much difference between Arch so far this year and QE his first year. He needs time to grow.

Now with that said, I believe he's got to hit the hot route when blitz. He's got to get rid of the ball quicker and don't lock into a receiver from the get go.

Yes, I agree about Arch and QE.

Recall last yr when Arch played when QE was injured. Why did he do so well? Clean pocket. He had a good amount of time for things to develop. Experienced OL.

This yr. He's been rocked too many times because the OL play is horrible. Yes, the first couple of games his accurracy was off. But now, he doesn't have enough time to progress through his receivers. He's also trying to hit the big play and not taking what's given to him. Is that the play calling? Adjust the play calling to short dump passes.

I don't know. His OL pretty much sucks right now. So many passes from Manning where he's getting hit as he throws.

Hard to grade a QB who is running for his life.

I saw an article that Texas leads the $ec in having their QB hit and/or hurried in the pocket. If I remember correctly, the percentage was well above 50% of the time. That is not a good stat to lead the conference in.

This is a Texas board alright. The 2nd string QB is always the most loved player on the team, until they become the starter.

Kinda like Archie Manning once faced back in the day, huh.

You know what stuns me? Since Sark's arrival... baring maybe year 1... our defense has been far superior to our offense. Both final four runs were due to the defense more than the offense IMO. This year the offense is.... I'll be kind.... poor. Beyond that, have we had really good QB play since Sark arrived? Has one QB exceeded expectations? I love Sark as a Head Coach, but his calling card coming in (QB developer and Offensive Coordinator) have been amongst the most disapointing aspects of his run in Austin.

All of that said, Arch played his best game against Florida IMO... he showed courage and heart. It's pretty tough to throw accurately with a helmet (filled by a 300lb man-child) under your chinstrap. Maybe, just maybe we will see a plethora of development going forward? Arch has tools, courage and heart... he's got that much.

I still can’t forget how amazing QE3 looked against Bama before getting hurt and also against OU. He looked every bit the part of his recruiting ranking those early games. Not sure if he got hurt again after OU then started sucking again but I agree that hurt redshirt freshman QE3 looks like healthy redshirt sophomore Arch in some ways.

I see a lot of difference between the two... I think what you're saying is equal value... about the same productivity? I agree with that.

Quinn was, seriously, about the worst QB I've ever seen under pressure. Arch is much better in that area.
Quinn had pin-point accuracy on short and mid range passes (with time to throw), Arch does not.
However, Arch is more accurate than Quinn throwing a long ball.
Arch is a much better runner.
Arch is much more willing to take a hit that QE
Apparently Quinn had a much better grasp on the offense... it seems to be dumbed down for Arch (motion, creative plays, etc..)

I agree 100% on your point that Arch needs to get rid of the ball quicker.
