SignUp Now!We are absolutely stuffing the run, so teams are throwing on us. We have the top 3rd down defense, top 5 rushing defense and one if the best red zone defenses in the country. The other guys are on scholarship too. They are going to do positive things. It's obvious that the strategy is to stop the run and minimize big pass plays. They nickle and dime us until they make a mistake, we stop them or they turn it over.First I guess you missed the smilie. . Was about pass defence not total defence. I saw nothing negative vs PK.
Then if you are happy with PK's pass defence, then I am happy for you. Three years and still learning the scheme? As for talent it is there or did Iowa St. have better. IMO the Big 12 is much weaker this year on a whole.
Not long ago, we had a defense who couldn't stop the run and there were missed tackles galore. Our pass defense needs work, but I have faith it will improve....it's just taking a little longer than we would like lol.We are absolutely stuffing the run, so teams are throwing on us. Is it a bit frustrating to see slant after slant get completed? Yes. Every defense has a s9ft stop and that is ours. Overall, I am very happy with the defense. Remember what PK inherited and where we are today? Night and day. Nip pick if you must, but we have a top notch defense and we are going to be hell to beat if we get into the CFP.

Guess you answered your own questionThis debate or what ever is about pass defence!
Some one said Iowa St. ran a defence that made it hard to pass on. My reply Apparently PK does use this defenceThen every or some goes wild in defence of PK. Explaining total defence lack of experence ln sceme, talent etc.
If fairto good teams pass like this what are the good teams going to do. Yes I know we beat Ala.
I never had a question. In the original post.Guess you answered your own question
We do have talent and yes, it is probably better than other teams but consider our defensive roster right now. Two stellar DTs but DEs that are young and not quite developed yet to be studs. When we get guys like 3rd year Colin Simmons out there, the pass defense will improve. We are starting a freshmen at LB and Gbenda has limitations, especially in pass coverage. It doesn't get much better than Barron at Nickleback but our CBs are players that likely need to play safety at the next level. And our safeties include a walk on (I love Taffe don't get me wrong) and an athletically limited Jerrin Thompson (I love him too). We already have freshmen at the CB and S spot with more talent and promise long term but they aren't ready for full time yet. This debate or what ever is about pass defence!

The other guys are on schoolarship too. Only two teams Horns played have close too Horns tallent. One loss and one win.
I just think with tighter coverage you could do better. We are absolutely stuffing the run, so teams are throwing on us. The downside to tighter coverage is if you get beat, a lot of times it's for 6. Do we get angry at PK for that? It almost seems like a lose lose situation for PKI just think with tighter coverage you could do better.
I'm willing to concede that PK and his assistants know their secondary guys better than I do and don't ask them to do things they're not consistently capable of. It's not like they don't understand their options. The downside to tighter coverage is if you get beat, a lot of times it's for 6. Do we get angry at PK for that? I don’t believe that PKs defense wants loose coverage. It appears to me to be used out of necessity. We have gotten to burned deep a few times this year. PKs trying to limit the burns.I just think with tighter coverage you could do better.
Be careful, you're using logic on this board!I'm willing to concede that PK and his assistants know their secondary guys better than I do and don't ask them to do things they're not consistently capable of. It's not like they don't understand their options.

I concede that it can be a bit frustrating at times, but here's where I finally ended up:I'm willing to concede that PK and his assistants know their secondary guys better than I do and don't ask them to do things they're not consistently capable of. Agreed. Playing tight coverage is a gamble. Get beat, and it could be a quick six. Better to force the opponent into long sustained drives which are harder to do consistently. Having a full secondary of outstanding cover guys at the college level is a luxury that few teams have. Teams that play tighter coverage probably realize it's a gamble they have to take in hopes of an upset. With an excellent offense and special teams, it's a risk Sark and PK don't have to accept unless the situation calls for taking the gamble.I concede that it can be a bit frustrating at times, but here's where I finally ended up:
We have a hell of a third down defense. Teams are going to get their yards, but ultimately will make a mistake or we will stop them. Of course they are going to score also, but make them earn it. Don't give up too many quick strikes and let Sark and his offense do their thing. We're 10-1, so I guess it's working.
I also understand that it works until it doesn't, but this team is good, but flawed. I fully expect the defense to give up easy passes and some yards and Sark to be too aggressive on offense at times. He's a gunslinger and always will be.
Accept this team for who they are not who we want them to be and they are more enjoyable to watch.
This is a discussion board, so of course all areas are subject to discussion. I just got tired of beating a dead horse and trying to enjoy the best season we've had in a decade and a half.

I believe our db’s are better than the schemes that are being used in the backend. So many times we’ve been a half step from a sack but the ball comes out because of soft coverage. I think jamming them at the line would benefit our defensive strength. The downside to tighter coverage is if you get beat, a lot of times it's for 6. Do we get angry at PK for that? That’s where we should be playing our more athletically gifted safeties.I don’t believe that PKs defense wants loose coverage. It appears to me to be used out of necessity. We have gotten to burned deep a few times this year. PKs trying to limit the burns.
Again, imagine if our defense could get off the field after a 3rd and 3 with. 9 yard cushion. Allowing the defense to play pitch/catch in that situation has been my only concern with the defense honestly.I concede that it can be a bit frustrating at times, but here's where I finally ended up:

I agree with what you are saying. The only other issue is what Rod Babers talks about which is the CB playing inside or outside leverage. If the CB lines up shading the receiver to the inside it makes those slants more difficult to complete. But I guess that makes the outside routes harder to cover and it's more difficult to get a safety over there to help out if the receiver jukes the CB like Worthy often does along the sidelines. Those slants that have been so difficult to defend are about cutting in front of the cornerback.
If the corner plays tight, slant and go is open.
Linebacker could drop on the slant, but then that opens the run.
If corner tackles properly you have a 6 to 10 yard gain.
Can the other team go all the way down the field without making a mistake 4 to 5 times ?
Odds are against it
