Sooners starting to get hot on offense in the top of the 5th. Score a couple on Dolcini who is pulled (probably to save her arm for the next game) and then welcome Sophia Simpson with a 2 run HR.

Horns lost 7-2. I was very confused to see that they are now set to play Arizona tomorrow. Arizona has been in the other bracket up to this point.

Well, the softball bracket is set up to have the loser of the game between 1-0 teams switch brackets before playing the 1-1 elimination game. This means Texas gets to play unseeded Arizona (instead of #5 UCLA again) and if they beat Arizona, they would have to go on to beat #7 Oklahoma State twice (instead of #1 Oklahoma).

It's an interesting bracket approach and in this case, really favors the Longhorns.

Arizona's RPI was 43 BTW. Definitely the team you'd want to be facing at this point.

Good switch forHorns. However Arizona eliminated Miss. St. in two gamessorta and upset.

In baseball pulling fot Texas State. Go Bobcats.

Texas battles back from down 2-1 to win 5-2. Relief pitcher Czech came in during the 2nd innings and shut Arizona out.

The win puts Texas in the semis, guarantees at least a 3rd place finish and another 5 points towards the directors cup.

With the points added by baseball and softball this weekend, Texas officially clinches the Directors cup with 3rd place finishes by both track teams even with no more wins on the diamond.

Stanford baseball has to hold on to win tonight and then win again tomorrow. Dropping out early in baseball further hurts their chances and they could actually end up being passed by Michigan at that point.

It's a moot point but I did realize I have been using the wrong scoring format all along. For some reason, I had it in my mind that football was one of the required 4 sports (along with M&W basketball and baseball). It is not but Women's volleyball is.

This will help Texas a bit, the 0 from football won't be counted and instead 25 points from W soccer will be included. +25 points

Stanford gets a nice boost by dropping the 0 in football and adding 50 points for volleyball. + 50 points

Hurts Michigan a bit, the have to count the 25 points for volleyball in exchange for the 50 points from women's tennis being dropped.  - 25 points

Does that mean we better or worse?

**Jump to the bottom to see update USTFCCCA scores for contenders if you do not want to read the full update**

Men's track will be in a dog (bulldog?) fight with UGA in the NCAA championship. After being ranked first all year, the final rankings update bumped Texas out of the top spot and replaced them with Georgia.

These rankings are an objective measure, ranking the top finishes by athletes across the entire season of meets and assigning points. While only the top 8 finishes at the NCAA meet will score team points, these rankings assign increasingly small amounts of points for athletes ranking well below this. The final rankings update included only points for athletes who advanced to the championship meet, up to 24 athletes per event.

Here is a link for the ranking system:

http://www.ustfccca.org/assets/rankings/2022_motf_d1_tfri_week10_natl_team_detail.pdf

After day 1 of competition, Texas ranks 4th but this is only after 6 of the 21 events have been scored. Semifinals for many track events were completed but the finals won't be run until tomorrow. As a way to see how the teams are stacking up after the 1st 6 scored events and semifinals the track events, I used the USTFCCCA rankings system and adjusted the scores based on the current status of the event. For events that have gone final, I adjusted the athletes predicted score to reflect their actual finish. For runners who failed to advance to the finals of their event, I subtracted their entire score as we now know they will not earn any team points. Note, the top 8 finishers score between 10-1 team points. Most track events qualify 9 runners for the finals.

Georgia advanced their runners in the 100, 200 and 400 M races but 5th ranked 800 m runner Clayborn Penders did not makes the finals. Other big losses include not advancing the 4x400M relay teams and losing 4th ranked decatholoner (injury?) who did not finish competition. They earned an unexpected point in Javelin, where 10th ranked athlete bumped up to 8th place and earned 1 point. All told, they lost 95.32 points off of their USTFCCCA rankings score.

Texas had a good day overall with all of their top 8 ranked athletes earning points or moving on to the finals except for Big 12 champion 100 m sprinter Micaiah Harris. The 4th ranked 100 m sprinter failed to make the finals in his event though he did advance in the 200 m where he has the top performance of the season. Jonathan Jones, #2 ranked in the nation in the 400 m advanced to the final while #9 Yusuf Bizimana advanced in the 800 m and looks to steal some points in the event. Both relays advanced and will look to score some points on Friday. Jumper Stacy Brown came in ranked #10 but improved his mark and finished 7th, earning valuable team points in the long jump. #1 Trip Piperi took home his 2nd consecutive NCAA championship in shot put. Leo Neugebauer is in the mix for a podium finish in the decatholon. Overall, Texas dropped 52 points off their USTFCCA score.

A mixed bag for Florida state as their #1 ranked 10k runner finished in 7th while their #4 and #7 longjumpers finished 2nd and 3rd. Their #2 ranked 4x100 squad failed to advance but their #1 ranked 100 hurdler did make the finals. The 5k will be an important race for them as they have runner ranked 7th and 10th. Overall, they dropped 28 points from their score.

Florida has a very strong sprint program and advanced 5 sprinters and both relay teams. The only failure coming from their 8th ranked 400 m runner but this is easily made up for by the #10 ranked 400 m advancing. They dropped a total of 25 points.

BYU's score was gutted with a combination of high ranked performers faltering and lower ranked performers not advancing as expected. Their 2nd ranked pole vaulter finished 6th, while their 6th ranked vaulter didn't place. #4 in the 800 m failed to advance. Other than that, they had multiple entries ranked in the teens or teens who did not advance as expected.

                        Updated Score (Original Score)

1. Texas -             206.31               (259.15)

2. Florida State - 169.21                (197.62)

3. Georgia -         165.46               (260.78)

4. Florida -           155.2                 (180.25)

5. Texas Tech -    128.77              (168.41)

6. LSU -                126.72              (186.51)

7. BYU -                94.23              (192.02)

Conclusion - Texas did well to only drop 1 predicted scorer (100 m #4) . Georgia lost several (800 m #5, Decathalon #4, and #6 4x400, #8 hammer toss). Florida State and Florida with strong days to move up and be in competition for 2nd.

Texas has opened a gap and is in a strong position.

I extended out the rankings to see how Stanford was sitting. They are poised to jump up from 9th to 5th, though a majority of their points are in events that haven't started yet. If they falter in the 5k or triple, they have lots of points to lose.

Only men's event yesterday was decathalon. Leo Neugebauer had a great performance with multiple personal bests throughout the 10 events and finished 2nd. He was ranked 5th coming in. Georgia had the 1st and 4th ranked athletes but only finished with 1 3rd place ranking. Texas further widens their advantage.

Texas men's track is currently in second place in team points with 20 (10 from shotput, 8 from decatholon, 2 from long jump).

Expected team points remaining:

100 m Micaiah Harris - 10 pts (1st place)

400 m  Jonathan Jones - 8 pts (2nd place)

800 m Yusuf Bizimana  - 0 pts (9th place)

4x100 m Relay team - 0 pts (9th place)

4x400 m Relay Team - 6 pts (3rd place)

That's an additional 24 points with a few opportunities to steal points in the 4x100 and 800 m. Anything over 40 points is likely enough to win the meet.

Predicted final team scores:

Texas - 44

Florida/Georgia -32

Florida State - 28

Hate to burst your bubble. Micaiah Harris did not make the finals in the 100m. He did in the 200, but looked like he was running with an injury. Jonathan Jones has a chance to do well in the 400m, Yusuf could score in the 800m but probably not a high finish, the 4x100 should score some points, the 4x400 set a school record in the prelims but the field is loaded. Also athletes in the Discus and Triple Jump but they would need big personal bests to be in the top 8.

I do feel they can score in the 40's but Florida has a lot of quality athletes in the finals and they would be my bet to win. Good news is the Horns have a 20 point head start going into tonight.

Crazy things can and do happen in championship meets with a field of great athletes. I will cheering the guys on while watching tonight.

The Women are in great shape to win the meet and I would say they are the team to beat on that side. Multiple qualifiers in multiple events for the Ladies! They are loaded with great sprinters.

Women's track had a very good day 1. Scoring points in long jump and advancing all top 8 ranked runners to the finals.

They have 2 runners in the finals of the 100, 200, 400 m events and 1 in the 800. 4x100 and 4x400 teams are of course strengths as well. Top 3 finishes in high jump, Triple jump and decathalon are also likely.

They are expected to score about 78 points, Florida will be behind them, scoring in the 60s. Unlikely to be terribly competitive for 1st place with a dominant Texas squad.

Good catch on Micaiah, I just mixed up the 100 and 200. I caught a replay of his 100 m heat - first start was called back. 2nd start, the runner next to him flinched in the blocks and Micaiah seemed to get off to a bad start. He was making up ground but no time for that in a 100m race.

Florida has sprinters but nothing else. Not enough meat on the bone for them to score enough to overtake Texas.
