Thoughts Following Tonight's Gut Wrencher Against Texas Tech

By the way... watching Auburn - Alabama... the Auburn QB is a Baylor transfer. This Auburn team looks like an NFL team compared to what we saw on the field last night.

This lose is  squarely on the Coaches.  Just like with Maryland they assumed that they were just going to win.  Tom needs to own this 100% which includes Beck as his OC .  This was a prime home game Friday night game , senior night ,  a game that would put us at 7 wins for the season and momentum for a bowl game,  and to top it off who lets Coach Kliff who is going to be fired after this season come in and beat you!   No ,  this belongs totally on the Coaches as Texas should have won this game by three TD's like all the other teams that have beaten Texas Tech.

I don't lay this at Sam's feet. He made mistakes, sure. I hate them just like everybody else. But what if Mapps doesn't fumble the punt? And how many other moments can be pointed to?

Sam was guilty of too much want to, too much wanting to make THE play. Thats immaturity. Time will solve that riddle more than anything else.

The whole team lost that game.

IMO, Buechele may never play another snap here. Whats coming in will be better than him. And I'm not sure they won't be better than Sam.

Good thing we beat WV or we'd be sitting at home. At least we get the extra practices this year.
..........but I do wish they'd just stay home. Another beat down coming that we can dwell on all off season.

This one is on the players.

I keep going full circle.

That first offensive series was scripted, and it had Herman’s signature all over it. Now recall the short time Harsin was here.  He, too, was a master at creating drives. Not everyone of them worked, but when one didn’t, it was normally a building block to set up tendency. Watching one piece build off of another was fascinating.

Unfortunately, I didn’t see anyone take advantage of that gorgeous first drive later in the game. It must drive Herman crazy. I can only imagine conversations he must have with confidantes.

To elaborate a bit more on bone-headed playcalls, did you catch the end of KSU/ISU?  All ISU had to do was burn clock with 2 minutes left, possession, and a 5 point lead, but no, he throws 2 passes which of course fall incomplete.

KSU gets possession, and as KSU does, wins the game with 00’s on the clock. ISU’s coach was irate after the first pass was thrown.

Ya think you hire good people but they can’t see the forrest, just the trees

I'll still have faith in Herman if he can keep this class together, add a few guys like Cook and some lineman, and finish in the top 4. Because that would be a miracle. And Jesus is just alright with me.

I’ll go into more detail on my offensive grades, but the receivers were terrible last night. I’ve seen high school receivers who have done a better job during the scramble drill than Texas receivers. How many times wasSam forced to scramble and throw the ball out of the bounds as 3 receivers stand near the sideline waving their hands in the air as a man is attached to their hip? Not good at all.
I am expecting our MENSA member coach to thoroughly evaluate his offensive staff immediately and comprehensively, which certainly includes the items below:

Player development / improvement

Player rotation

Game day adjustments

If there is no evidence that this takes place, I’m saying it now, Randolph Duke for President!

It looks like Herman disagrees with you. It's good to know that all on the players and we have a great coaching staff. Maybe we can give Tim Beck a long term contract, so we don't lose him.

Typical misleading article headline written by some hack.

Herman doesn't come close to saying what the writer says he said. And he even links to another article and deliberately misleads what is said in that article as well.

I am somewhere between devastated and out right pissed about this game. I have never seen such an unprepared bunch in my life. We had super field position all game against a terrible defense and made them look like the 85 Bears. We cant get a TD with 1st and goal from the 1 foot line? Goddammit! We get an otherworldly performance from our punter....who not only averaged 50 yds on 9 kicks, but put 2?...3...kicks inside the 5 yd line? We cant come out on top after that? And WTF? How many dead certain interceptions did we drop?

The total ineptitude of the offense was mind boggling. Sam Elinger made Case McCoy look like Joe Montana. Lil Jordon and Armanti ought to dis own the whole rest of the WR group. We were bamboozled into thinking Colin Johnson was all that. I wish there was one positive to take away from that game but I am not sure what it could be. Conner Williams may have just played himself out of the first round. Dickson was fabulous but what in hell is he doing having to punt 9 times against that shit crapper defense? I cant imagine at this point what FBS team we could beat in the wheat germ bowl but there we are. This one hurt me bad.

I've waited a couple of days to comment because it felt like I was hit twice in the gut on Friday night. Listening to the basketball game, I really thought we were on the verge of finally beating Duke but no. Then the football game, we had the game won and it shouldn't have been that close but no.

Sam is a true freshman and he made a lot of mistakes this year which costs Texas multiple games. I remember Texas fans wanting to move VY to WR and he had a year to redshirt. Back to Friday, if Burt throws the ball a lot sooner, Sam was wide open in the endzone. We had Foreman and Lil Jordan drop balls that could have been TDs. We had several dropped INTs, one where there was nothing in front of him but green.

Bottom line the plays were there, unfortunately they were not executed. As dillohorn stated, this game was on the players, period. Maybe they were content on the fact they were going to a bowl?

Two enormous considerations that are rarely discussed are the quality of AD and the relationship between the HFC and the AD. Tom Herman may think he is the smartest person in the room, but I assure everyone, Mike Perrin is in a league far above Tom Herman.

One story I would love to see someone from the staff write is a discussion with Perrin about his tenure while the AD and the transition the program is about to enter as the new AD is announced and begins to execute whatever plan he is being brought in to manage.

My one question about HErman is whether he is smart enough to take counseling from others. From the way he mis-handled the Horny and Leitao situations, I have serious doubts. I am sure Perrin has tried to help Herman as he takes over the reigns of the program. I just wonder how much Herman listens.

The ability of the new AD to help Tom Herman grow past his weaknesses will be instrumental in determining whether Herman gets things turned around, or when he is just another Charlie Strong. Herman hired Horny not because he was the best guy for the job, but because Horny was a friend with abysmal job prospects and Herman wanted to help a friend out in a time of need. Herman sacrificed his relationship with a segment of the alumni, and subverted the best interests of the program out of loyalty to a personal friendship. Not a smart decision for such an intelligent man.

I wonder whether Herman will once again let personal considerations overrule the best interests of the program and decide not to make necessary adjustments to his staff. Both Perrin and the new AD will have or have had discussions with Tom Herman on his weaknesses as HFC, including his judgement when balancing his duty to respects best interests of the program when the "right decision" may adversely affect one of his personal friendships. I hope Tom takes the advice to heart.

The new AD will be announced in the next few days. I hope he is someone capable of mentoring Tom Herman, assuming Tom can be mentored. Steve Patterson was a nightmare. Perrin has righted the ship. Someone like Del Conte would be a great hire as AD. We will see how it all turns out soon.

Tom has a lot to prove to show he was the right guy to run the program, especially considering all the latitude he has been given on how the program is run. So far he hasn't come close to validating his choice as HFC. He needs to change that quickly.

If the incoming QBS are better than Shane they are for sure better than Sam IMO

Sorry, but your shooting the messenger. Herman could have and should have said it's the players and the coaches.

When your suppose to be an offensive genius like Herman was billed to be to be outperformed by the worst OC UT has had is pretty bad.

UT with Shawn Watson in 2014 averaged 33 points per game. In 2015 UT averaged 30 points per game. and this was with Tyrone Swoops and Jerrod Heard as QB.

This year with Herman and Beck we scored 29 points per game. I never thought when we hired Herman that a Shawn Watson offense would score more points than Herman.

Can anyone explain why Porter was on the field when we were on the goal line? He is the least physical back we have and wasn't blocking well.

I plan on reviewing the WV game again to watch Cuney. Herman said he received a grade of "Warrior". I purposely watched him against Tech and he was abysmal. I know he was forced into action but it was laughable the number of plays he never touched a defender or was grabbing for them as they ran by him.

I suspect these two guys were stud practice players and were rewarded PT for that reason. Neither earned it during the game.

I think Cuney earned his spot simply because he was there and there was nobody behind him on the depth chart. As far as I remember he had his best game against WVU and was actually blocking from time to time, against Tech I don't really now.

Porter, can't really tell you, but he also had his best game against WVU. Plus Carter seems to have some ball security issues. But yes, Young should've been in, IMO

Agreed, again. Your on point... I’d give it to Danny young 3 straight times. Kid hits the hole hard regardless of its open or not.

Wish the coaches had Old Horn's salt and grit and determination.
Good writing. No edits.

Left over from Charlie is the inability to gauge talent. I have discussions with a friend about the "what you see in practice" paradigm. He likes it, I don't. It's what you see in games that matters. The place kicking is a good example. Kicked well in practice, but not in games. Flip that and you can't go by what you see in practice to determine real-time performance.

Any pilots here that ever stalled NOT on purpose, or got slightly lost flying at night, will know what I mean. How about ending up in DF/W air traffic control space without realizing it! Did that once. What matters is how these kids perform in real time with split-second decision making. Real life is surreal compared to practice and simulators.

I fortunately had the where-with-all to always do the right thing in a pinch when the unexpected happened while flying. Got vertigo once flying at night, too. Wanna talk about surreal.. that was.  In a split second looked right at the instruments and took a deep breath...  We need QBs, and receivers on routes, to act in the moment with heady play, and balls-in-the-hands of DBs doing the same. You find that out in a real game. From there you decide who plays.

I'd stop this mess of gauging playing time in practice, and practice something else.

Like an offense, for starters.
