CS Meeting With Coaches Today (Personnel Changes)

I guess we took away different views.  To me it was more of the same crap we heard last year.  Ill bet Swoopes starts just so he can beat up on Rice and everything will be back to dandy in longhorn nation again.  The Iowa State game comes to mind.

Our new competition level is now Iowa State and Rice.

Swoopes faces the media

update - LHN cut if off.  Out of kindness I suppose

I just dont get this undying loyalty to Swoopes... It appears that everybody is ok going down with the ship. Swoopes was the worst QB that I watched on Saturday, pure and simple. If being a smart good kid equaled TD's Swoopes would be a Heisman finalist, but they don't.

A lot of people have very high expectations for Heard that are not yet borne out by his performance. Don't think for a minute that if Heard could outperform Swoopes he would not be playing.

The bottom line is that we do not have a quarterback that is very good. We will have to live with it until we can develop another one.

Im not so sure Cherry.  I would like to think that is the case.  Watson has been proven to be very fond of Swoopes just hearing the interviews.  I believe he even said hes like a son to me.  The reporter did ask CS if Watson's judgement to play Swoopes was being clouded by his feelings for Swoopes.

Fellas, have some work to do around the house so I need to run but I believe (and hope) things will change. If not, then the whole staff needs to be evaluated.

BTW, Rice is not the litmus test nor should they ever be.

One last thing. VY didn't start his RS-FR year until around the 4th game. Give Heard a chance & yes, Watson seems to be betting his future on Swoopes which may be the most disturbing thing.

I would love to believe this but in the case but I'm not sure Watson isn't to emotionally invested in Swoopes. More like a father is to a son.

I think this is more of a two step process. First give the play calling duties (all of them) to Wick and second, I'd like to see what happens with Heard at QB for a game. I know it's Rice but will we see something to build on?

I get what you're saying but we truly do not know what Heard can bring us until he is given the opportunity, which he has not been given thus far. What we do know beyond a shadow of a doubt(at least in my mind) is that Swoopes cannot play high quality football. We do know that he does not have "IT." He has been given plenty of opportunity to shine and has failed miserably. He has been given way beyond the benefit of the doubt, ability wise.

I could be wrong but I do believe that Heard can outperform Swoopes. At a very minimum Heard's confidence hasn't been destroyed. At this point the staff is doing Ty a huge disservice by continuing to play him. He is going to continue to not be good and he is going to continue to get bashed by the media and anybody that watches college football. He's still a kid and the staff is doing him no favors.

The real bottom line is that we have 1 QB that we KNOW is not good at all and another QB that has not been given a chance to prove anything one way or another.

I was being sarcastic

With Charlie Strong's limited involvement in the offense, the evaluation of Heard is entirely that of Shawn Watson. I do not trust Watson's perspective on anything.

....

Rice will be coming into this game knowing this is their best shot in awhile

Since 1965, we are 40-2 vs. Rice.

They last won in 1994 (a result completely on Machovic).

Rice did go 8-5 last season with a bowl win over Fresno St.

This is Bailiff's 9th season there.  He has won 10-games twice, has 3 bowl wins and they have made a bowl the last 3 seasons.

Last week, they ran for 401 (7.4 ypc).

The good news is there DL from last season is gone.
