On Saturday, the Texas Longhorns will host the Georgia Bulldogs in their first top-five ranked matchup at DKR since 2006. Today, our Devon Messinger and Dylan DeRaud discuss their scouting report of the Georgia Bulldogs in the YouTube video above.
DeRaud’s Scouting Report of the Georgia Offense:
No surprise for Texas fans here but this Georgia offense is the best the Longhorns will see so far into the season. Led by a 1st round NFL talent quarterback in Carson Beck, the Bulldogs will be able to attack the secondary that teams like Michigan and Oklahoma couldn’t. Beck ranks third in the SEC in both yards thrown and touchdowns thrown with 1,818 yards and 15 pass touchdowns.
A big part of this has to do with the deep threats this team has at wide receiver. Senior wide receiver Arian Smith leads the team with 412 reception yards and has tallied 23 receptions and 3 touchdowns. Be on the lookout for other playmakers like Dillon Bell and Dominic Lovett as well in the receiver room because they will also open up the field for Georgia.
In the backfield, projected NFL draft pick and Florida transfer, Trevor Etienne will be another key focal point of the Bulldog offense. He hasn’t been other wordly as he has 335 rush yards on the season with 4 rushing touchdowns. However, he’s become more involved in the passing game as Etienne has logged 12 receptions in his past 2 games.
On the edge, Georgia hasn’t replaced Brock Bowers in the tight end spot but sophomore Lawson Luckie leads tight ends with 10 receptions, 144 yards and 3 touchdowns. Lastly, this offensive line for the Bulldogs ranks up there with Texas in terms of pure talent. Left guard Dylan Fairchild leads a line full of NFL talent big men who will test the Texas front seven all day.
Messinger’s Scouting Report of the Georgia Defense:
While this year’s Georgia team may not be as star studded as they have been in years, they have still been solid. This season, the defense is ranked 27th in the country in yards per game allowed with 312.5 per game. Leading the team in tackles is junior safety Malaki Starks with 32 tackles this season. While the secondary has been steady, they are tied for 92nd in the country in interceptions created with three this year. Along with Starks, redshirt senior safety Dan Jackson has patrolled the field with an additional 31 tackles.
On the defensive front, redshirt junior defensive end Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins leads the team that is 80th in sacks allowed (1.83 per game) with three sacks on the season. On Saturday, the Bulldogs front seven will have their work cut out for them against one of the best offensive lines in the country.
Defensively, the Bulldogs rank 44th in run defense and 39th in pass defense. Moreover, the team is ranked 20th in the country in scoring with 17.17 points allowed per game. However, last weekend against Mississippi State, the Bulldogs allowed 31 points to a team that only was able to muster 13 points against the Longhorns.
