Nathan Thornhill lasted only 3 2/3 innings for the Longhorns in his season debut and Sacramento State rode a three-run third inning to take Game 2 from the Longhorns at Disch Falk on Saturday. Texas held its only lead of the game in the first inning on an RBI single by Mark Payton.  The Hornets answered by scoring a run in the 2nd and 3 more in the 3rd inning, holding a 4-1 lead. Texas cut the lead to 4-2 in the 5th inning when designated hitter Matt Moynihan ripped a single to right field, scoring Codey McElroy. Nathan Lukes scored for Sacramento State in the seventh inning on Andrew Ayers’ RBI single and Texas matched the run in the eigth on Madison Carter’s single which scored Eric Weiss. Neither team would threaten to score again and the Hornets evened the series 1-1 with the rubber match taking place on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
Some of the “new arms” on the pitching staff had an opportunity to showcase their stuff on Saturday. Weatherford College JUCO transfer Cameron Cox relieved Nathan Thornhill in the fourth inning and saw his first action in a Texas uniform. Cox pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up one run on three hits.  Freshman Travis Duke (Dawson High School, Pearland) gave up one hit in 1.2 innings pitched and freshman Chad Hollingsworth (Robinson High School, Waco) walked one and struck out one in his 1/3 innings pitched in the ninth inning.
Dillon Peters will take the mound for Texas on Sunday as the Longhorns look to win their season-opening series against the Sacramento State Hornets.
